Did you know about the history of Valentine’s Day? Read on.

Sometime in the 14th century, Valentine’s Day – February 14 – was the day established by the Romans when two Christian priests, Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni, were martyred as a symbolic profession of their faith and dedication to the church. Back then, all Christian martyrs were given the name Valentine, although nobody really knew the reason why.

Although in its connection to Valentine’s Day, one of three figures have constantly occurred in martyrology: a priest in Rome (Valentine of Rome), a bishop of Terni (Valentine of Terni), and a martyr in the Roman province of Africa.

Nevertheless, the origin of Valentine’s Day can be traced to older customs and traditions around Europe, most of them linked to the practices of paganism, such as the marriage of the mighty God and Goddess, Zeus and Hera, which follows the proceedings according to the Athenian calendar.

The first mention of Valentine’s Day in the form of a love note was pioneered by a French aristocrat, Charles, Duke of Orleans, who addressed it to his wife. Even so, the first mention of Valentine’s Day in literature was undoubtedly penned by the greatest writer ever known to man, Shakespeare. In Hamlet (1600-1601), Ophelia recited in a sonnet for Hamlet anticipating the arrival of St. Valentine’s Day.

However, the custom of gift-giving which propelled the enterprise of Valentine’s greeting cards around the world had only begun well into the 18th century. The first greeting card created to honor the occasion was made by Esther Howland, a native of Worcester, Massachusetts. At the age of 19, Howland created intricate Valentine cards for his father’s business associates, which had subsequently launched her career in greeting cards.

As it stands at present, St. Valentine’s Day has gone a long, long way. Hallmark thrives on occasions like this by mass-producing love notes to go with brands of sweets. And cupid “the love god” is made famous by the commemoration, as well.

Yet the most intriguing invention to come in the latter days of honoring St. Valentine is the popularization of Love Coupons. Yep, you heard right. Love Coupons.
